Welcome to Cinema Summit

Let's explore what this website is all about.

We are Alex Darke and Trevor L. Nelson, creators of Cinema Summit. If you desire to create an independent film, television show, or web series - or just want to learn more about creating a sucessful career for yourself in the film industry but don't know where to start, then this page is for you.

Our belief system in helping you learn is simple: share the truth, be honest, work hard, and lead by example. That is what we are all about and that is what Cinema Summit is all about.

What is Cinema Summit?

In our experience, what most independent filmmakers crave - and what we focus on here at CS - is the following:

Creating a pathway to express your creativity with the medium of film & video while earning a living doing so.

In other words, we want to help you acquire the tools of the trade, the knowledge, and the skill to excel in the industry and support yourself and your family while creating projects that you love and surrounding yourself with people who are equally passionate and understand you and your journey.

What types of career paths are realistic?

We have a podcast episode that we think is required listening for anyone interested in learning about the various career paths one can take in the industry.

CS fans tell me all the time how much these episodes helped them understand the types of opportunities available both in the freelance and salaried worlds. I guarantee they’ll help you too.

If you love the episodes, be sure to subscribe to the Cinema Summit Podcast on iTunes to get new episodes as they come out.

What Cinema Summit is NOT.

Let's dispel some myths and set realistic expectations before we go any deeper.

1. Breaking into the film and television industry is all about "who you know".

The truth of the matter is that anyone can fly into Los Angeles without knowing a single person and take the industry by storm. Yes, having a large network of other talented individuals is ideal, but not everyone starts out with that large Rolodex of people to call upon whenever they need to boost up in the world. Working hard and striving to be the best is what makes people notice you, and in turn, brings them into your network. You will be surprised at how quickly you can become the person that other people call on.

2. Breaking into the industry doesn't happen overnight.

While it is true that you likely won't achieve stardom and have a gang of studio executives lobbing trashcans full of cash at you overnight, it's not difficult to get started on the path to success. It just turns out, no one wants to start at the beginning, everyone wants to start at the end of the middle. But, have patience and with the help of Cinema Summit, you will climb quickly.

3. I need to know everything before I can start making money doing what I want to do.

Wrong. This is a common thought that people will go through when they are starting out, or even after they have been in the industry for a while but are wanting to take their career to the next level. But, the truth is, this is your own fear talking. You don't need to know EVERYTHING to be a successful filmmaker. Don't be intimidated by other people who know more than you about certain topics. Instead, learn from them and say to yourself, "Hey,  that's cool, I didn't know that. But now I do." The industry is constantly changing, and everyone is constantly learning as they go. Don't be fooled by people who think they know everything. Take risks, learn from your mistakes, and keep going. :)
